Revisiting PoP

I think it's time we revisit that Prince of Persia script, in light of today's article in the Lowestoft Journal.

02 May 2008

FROM premieres in Berlin and Los Angeles to filming in New Zealand, Morocco and Alicante the jet-setting acting career of a rising star from Lowestoft is literally taking off.

Fresh from treading the red carpet at the premiere of 10,000 BC in March, it is continuing to be a busy schedule for Reece Ritchie as this week he received a double boost. For the Oulton Broad 21-year-old was flying to Alicante this week after he was picked to star with Colin Farrell for the film Triage.

The trip followed hard on the heels of being chosen for his latest assignment starring alongside Jake Gyllenhaal for the first-part of an expected trilogy in the film based on the video game Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

The Disney film, which is being directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and Donnie Brasco) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, is due for release in August 2009.

It follows the Playstation computer game classic about a prince who teams up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world.

After attending auditions in London in January, Reece received the call that he'd got the part at the weekend and this means that he will be off to Morocco for filming of the video game adaptation in June.

With the project also set to be filmed at the UK Pinewood Shepperton studios, Gyllenhaal, who has appeared in The Day After Tomorrow and Brokeback Mountain, plays the prince with Ritchie being his accomplice and best friend. The part of Princess Farah has yet to be announced.

But before this the former Benjamin Britten High School pupil, who was back in the town this week with parents Jayne and Russell, brother Ross and sister Ria, is due to fly out to New Zealand again in the next couple of weeks to finish off post-production of the Alice Sebold novel The Lovely Bones.

After playing Moha - a bloodthirsty mammoth hunter - in 10,000 BC, Ritchie is cast as the romantic Ray Singh for The Lovely Bones, which has been directed by Peter Jackson (of Lord of the Rings fame) and this is due out in March next year.

If you've read the script and can tell me who this kid is supposed to be, gold star!

I don't see a "sidekick" or a "best friend" mentioned. Most of Dastan's exploits in Sands of Time have him on the run with the Tamina, whom I assume is the princess.

I read the script and honestly I can't remember there was a 'best friend' in there.
Dastan has got a lot of brothers though, he could be one of them...

What do you think, Brothers Spy? ;)

Hello all...

Here is my spoiler-filled estimate of what is going on in Morocco.

Let me preface this post by explaining that most of what you are about to read is actually speculation on my part. However, I use the limited information that has been released publicly, in addition to the information given to me by my source and scenes taken right out of the script.

Here goes...

PART I: Oukaimeden, July 22-24

Filming for Prince of Persia did in fact begin on July 22nd. This information comes from my source, who mentioned it twice to me, and was confirmed by Variety. It also comes from Icelander Gisli Orn Gardarsson who has a part in the film.

You may remember that Gisli did an interview one or two days after production began where he also confirmed that the first location of filming was high in the Atlas Mountains in a city called Oukaimeden, at some ski resort. He also said that the set was "more exotic than [he] thought it would be...[there were] snakes, monkeys and desert storms."

I'm also pretty sure that Mr. Gardarsson plays the character Garsiv who is a long time rival of Dastan in the King's court and is given the task of chasing Dastan and Tamina down after they flee following the death of the King.

The first scene they shot begins on page 60 in the script I gave you guys. In this scene Dastan and Tamina are being followed by Hassansins, under the command of Garsiv, through a bazaar into a house.

During this sequence, after Tamina --- in disguise --- gives an impromtu bellydance to the soldiers hired to find her and Dastan, she is captured by Garsiv. It is then up to Dastan to find her and free her. This leads to an ensuing battle between Dastan and the Hassansins.

Some of this may sound familiar to you because it is exactly what some poster on imdb wrote after the first few days of filming:

I have seen him [Jake] as the Prince and he is fantastic. The fight scenes at farmhouse on the rock are going to be awesome!! And Jake is a real Prince, you will see him with his make up and long hair, his costume, he is awesome.

This story was essentially repeated to me by my source as well, lending it credibility.

Eventually, in the script, Dastan discovers the whereabouts of Tamina and attempts a stealth rescue operation. It is during this operation, when trying to aim a bow-and-arrow in an effort to free Tamina from the rope which binds her, that Dastan comes into contact with snakes [page 66 in the script]. This confirms what Gisli Orn Gardarsson said regarding there being "snakes, monkeys and desert storms."

Dastan rescues Tamina and this is where she finally trusts him and tells him about the full power of the Sands of Time.

There is no doubt that much of this scene will actually be filmed inside a studio in England (all the interior stuff i'm guessing), but i'm 99.99% sure that this is, in fact, the scene they were filming from July 22-24 in Oukaimeden.

To be continued...

Part II will come shortly.

Thanks, brother's spy! Love all this! Is this from the same script that was dated 2006 or something? Have you been able to find a more recent one?

I await Part II with bated breath!

According to my source, Jake did not film on the weekend of July 25th to 27th. Many of the participants of the film also attended the Comic-Con that weekend in San Diego. Thus they didn't film anything of any importance.

They did film many establishing shots (of the mountains, sunrise, sunset, etc.) and they did film an establishing shot of the Persian caravan en route home to NASAF with the spoils from the opening battle.

(The dates are estimates from the information my source gave me).

Bou Ourhiz, July 28-August 2

The town of Bou Ourhiz is found near the larger city of Azilal. This town is found in the Atlas Mountains, though far more secluded than Oukaimeden.

This is a perfect location for many of the scenes which takes place in the mountains found in the script. This is where Dastan and Tamina find themselves immediately after they escape NASAF.

Remember that both Jordan Mechner and Jerry Bruckheimer described this film as a "journey." No doubt the first three weeks of filming, scattered all across central Morocco in the Mountains and beyond, corresponds perfectly with that description. This is also why, I believe, no family or visitors are allowed on the set, given that they don't stay in one location all that long and additional people would no doubt only be a burden which might slow them down.

Beginning on page 29 in the script, Dastan and Tamina ride into the mountains/hills to take refuge from the pursuing army led by Garsiv. It is here that Dastan befriends Farood [page 40], a local "mountain boy" who I believe is to be Dastan's "sidekick."

In the script I have, and shared, this part isn't too big, but it's possible (likely) that this was one of the sequences which was rewritten and enlarged given that Reese Ritchie, who is playing the part, seemed to suggest that his part was larger than it's written in the script.

Also, it would explain why Reese Ritchie was to start filming on July 31st, which corresponds with the filming schedule here (July 28 - August 2). Since it's likely that the script has been changed, it's hard to tell exactly what happens.

In the script I have, Farood meets Dastan and Tamina after Dastan is first made aware of the power the dagger he possesses holds and a close run in with Garsiv. Farood then helps Dastan and Tamina through the Mountains, being that both Dastan and Tamina are royalty and probably don't know much about surviving in the mountains.

There are several scenes which take place in the mountains and that may also explain why they filmed here for an entire week, rather than three days like all the other locations.

Sidi Hammouch August 3-5

I wasn't sure of this location yesterday given that this town is very far away from all the other filming locations, and I am still less confident of this than the others, but it's beginning to grow on me.

The reason is not only because the town name is very similar to the name my source gave me, but also because a large river runs through this town.

The reason this is important is because towards the end of the script, there is an important sequence involving a bridge and a river where the Vizer Nizam (Ben Kingsley) finally catches up to Dastan and Tamina after the Hassassins let them get away at the farmhouse.

Here Nizam takes the dagger from Dastan, and thus controls the sands of time for himself. This scene is important in that this is the second plot point of the whole story, finally revealling that Nizam was behind the whole dastardly situation and was usurping power for himself the whole time and ultimately leads us into the final act of the story.

Beginning on page 91 in the script, Dastan and Tamina escape Nizam --- and certain death --- by escaping through a "broken bridge chasm" and ending up in the river.

Eventually they arrive at a "stone bridge" where they are met by Garsiv. Outnumbered, and surrounded, Dastan and Tamina make an incredible escape by leaping into "a bottomless gorge" (they are tied to a rope of course). Using the power of the dagger they somehow manage back into "loophole corridor" where they must find Nizam before he refills the sands of time and holds power over everyone.

Poor Garsiv just stands there, not sure how Dastan escaped him again.

Taroudant August 6-8

Although i'm not 100% sure about Sidi Hammouch, I am absolutely positive about Taroudant. The city of Taroudant is located less than fifty miles from both Marrakeck and Ouarzazate and houses impressive fortress-like city walls that are famous tourist attractions.

These city walls are supposed to be the city walls of NASAF (described in the script on page 26), the capital of King Shahraman --- Dastan's father.

Most of the scenes in NASAF takes place indoors, thus will certainly be filmed in England. But the beginning of the sequence, and the end, take place outside in full view of the "city walls."

On page 17 we see the victorious army enter the walled city led by Dastan and his brothers. This is the scene where Garsiv is first introduced in the story.

On page 25 Dastan and Tamina break away and flee the palace, being pursued by Garsiv, after the death of King Shahraman (for which Dastan is blamed). This, of course, is the first plot point and leads to the whole journey thereafter...

So there you have it. That's what I believe they've filmed in the first three weeks of production.

Beginning on Monday August 11th, this Monday, they will move production to Ouarzazate itself where they have constructed a massive set which will stand in for the fortress of Alamut.

Thus I believe that they will begin with the major battle sequence at the beginning and at the end of the film.

I believe this battle sequence will probably last two weeks itself. Then they will film several scenes that take place in "the court yard" of this palace throughout the story. This should lead to September 5 and Jake's last day in Morocco.

There will be one additional week in Morocco, but these scenes will focus on Nizam and the other villains of the story.

After September 12, production moves to back to England.

FL,

lol, you didn't have to wait long.

Yes this is from the script from 2006. It has been changed but I think the sequence is more or less the same. At least I am assuming it is.

FL комментирует...

So what do we think that PoP set in Ait Benhaddou is supposed to be?

Анонимный комментирует...

brothers spy, you're an angel!! You've done an excellent job of reconstructing and tracking this! This is great to kind of visualize all the hard work involved for Jake and all the other members of the cast and crew.

This sounds as if it's probably the most isolated shoot Jake's ever been on. Even moreso then BBM. BBM was very isolating, but in a much different way, I think.

He's in a foreign country, entirely different culture, different language, etc. Atlas Mountains, deserts, walled cities. What an adventure!!!! No way could I see families being accomodated. I suspect they are roughing it to some extent.

I am wondering about the physicality too. The fighting, horse back riding, being dropped into bottomless gorges, rivers, the parkour, and hoping he will CGI a lot of it in London! ;) ;)

The Ait Benhaddon set is Ouarzazate.

Here's a direct quote from the email sent by my source:

(After he gave me the information I already described).

The 11th to Ouarzazate, in particular to Ait Benhaddon.

I think that's where they're filming for the next four weeks. I think that's the main set.

FL комментирует...

Okay, thanks. I guess I was a little confused - thinking the main set was in the actual city of Ouarzazate in the province of Ouarzazate. Ait Benhaddou is also in the province of Ouarzazate.

Анонимный комментирует...

FL,

I didn't realize that either. I'm not really familiar with any of these cities and just assumed that Ait Benhaddou was a district within the city of Ouarzazate. I didn't even know that Ouarzazate was a province.

But he mentioned it specifically and the photos seem to confirm what he wrote, so i'm just taking his word on it.

Ait Benhaddou, and Ouarzazate, were the only cities my source spelled correctly so i'm assuming he (and the rest of the crew) are more familiar with them than the others, where they didn't seem to spend much time as I already noted.

In either case, the set in Ait Benhaddou will be the main set for the remainer of their time in Morocco --- I think.

Thanks so much for all your detective work bs!! I'm really enjoying all your reports and updates on Pop.

It sounds like the rest of the filming in Morocco will be filmed at Ouarzazate until September.
