Brothers spy if you find this, my question is really about the timeframe of the movie. One of my minor quibbles with the original was I didn't get a sense of time passing, I really had no idea how long Tobey's character had been held captive, he looked exactly the same at the beginning as he did when he carried out 'that' act - is this addressed in the movie at all, is there more of a sense of how long he's been there, which to me would give more creedance to why he did what he did.
Hope that all made sense and you know what I'm talking about.
I understand what Susanne Biers was going for there - refer to Jannick's crime but never show it or the victim. I think I'd like to either see the crime or later on see the scene when he goes to apologize to her.
Where oh where is Brothers Spy when we need him/her??
Another thing I was interested in, does the relationship between Tommy and Grace remain the same as between Jannick and Sarah - or is it taken up a level (which personally, at the moment I hope not)

1. For the most part the relationship between Grace and Tommy is the same as Jannick and Sarah, as is the relationship between the Brothers. However, in that scene near the end where Grace/Sarah is taking a shower and Tommy is standing outside her door, she realizes that he is there and contemplates letting him in (if you catch my meaning). From the sounds of the script it seems that this little scene lasts longer than the original and implies that she has fallen for him as hard as he did for her. He says things like, "I can't bury you a second time..." and "Don't leave me here all alone with dad..." etc. It's obvious that despite getting his ass kicked by his brother only moments earlier (that fight was also more intense than the original) he loves his brother very much. Everything just seems to be more intense between the two.
3. The father is an even bigger asshole to Tommy than in the original.
4. The small town aspect is much more prevalant in the American version than in . In the American version a lot of what happens is tied in the concept of "Americana" and its nature. For example, Sam is the all-American boy. A war hero. A football hero. A good father and husband (having married young), etc. He's an upstanding person all around. This is tied into the ideal of the American Dream and our concept of what American men should be. The story takes place in a small town, so that too plays a role. Another dimension between the brothers is added due to this juxtaposition which I do not remember at all in the original film. In the original it pretty much stuck with the idea that one brother was good and the other was bad and the story proceeded dealing solely with the duality of human nature. External factors played no part in the decisions they made with the exception of the obvious --- what happens to Sam/Michael in Afghanistan.
5. The American version deals with Tommy's assault a little more than in the original. At first, Tommy is very defensive about it and gets angry when it is brought up. The second scene of the film deals with a conversation involving Tommy and Sam about it where Sam tells Tommy that he has been in contact with the victim and gives him a card with where she works, trying to convince Tommy to make ammends. This really upsets Tommy who is angry that Sam had even seen the woman. I do not remember this in the original, but then again I may have missed the first couple of minutes. The woman, and Tommy's coming to terms with what he did is an important part of his character's evolution in the story.
So that's all I have for now. I'm not sure about timeframes, as I didn't pay attention to that. I can try to look it up, it'll have to be later though.
My question's pretty simple: Do Jake and Natalie have any love scenes in this movie??? No graphic description necessary. A simple yes or no will suffice.
I will be crushed if they don't. I 'm not looking for Jane Austen here!
Aside from that, it sounds as if this movie could really get Jake some "awards season" attention.
Personally, I think the casting is perfect. And I liked Connie Neilsen in the original.

Can I get in on the script action as well? I've seen the original version of this movie so I don't mind being spoiled. I'm rather interested in seeing if the Americanized version of Jannik has that same free-floating aggression about him that the Danish version has. Not unlike Jarhead's Swoff, come to think of it. Although Jannik maybe has more reason for his self-loathing than Swoff who only had boredom to blame for his jerky ways. It took me a good bit of the movie to really want to root for Jannik.

I'm not sure you can trust the location in the script. It wasn't dated and let's not forget that it was a toss-up between Boston and New Mexico for shooting locations. It's possible that it was changed once they began filming. We won't know until the film comes out.
I like this script. I like to think they left all the dialogue as is. Because then I can see what drew Jake to this part.
And you're right, brothers spy, locations DO change. I guess it was just a bit jarring to read references to Pennsylvania when I knew they shot it in New Mexico, because PA and NM structurally, geographically and topographically looking NOTHING alike.

I always thought that this story would work better as an American film than as a Danish/European film. I like the story and the dynamics between the characters (that is universal) and the original screenwriter should be commended for her work (and most of it was kept in tact which is a strong endorsement of it) but I think the war on terror and how it has damaged our national character and psyche (ie: how we do things that are morally questionable and justify them using security and 'protecting our families, etc. much like Sam/Michael --- the all-American boy --- did) is reflected in the American version and not so much in the Danish version.
It's subtle, but it's there.
It's something that Americans live and deal with (the contradiction of protecting our way of life by defacing many of the values which gave us that way of life in the first place) more than the Europeans do.
The American version has that added dynamic to the story which the original does not.
Also, having just watched the original, I thought the Afghanistan scenes could definitely be done better, and probably will given early reports.

That's my hope as well, the whole Afghanistan bit jarred for me, not because of what happened, but more because they looked like they'd shot it just round the corner, for what of a better phrase, and Sam/Michael looked exactly the same from beginning to end, so I had no sense of how long he'd been there and why he'd give in so easily and carry out that act - I've always put that down to budgetary constraints and shooting schedule, which hopefully haven't happened here

Brother's Spy, thank you for the script. I read it yesterday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to see Jannik has retained his punkish qualities. Will be interesting to see what Jake brings to the table with this character. We really haven't had an opportunity to directly compare Jake's acting with someone else's.
There's a line that had me wincing, in the hope that it would be dropped from this version. In the scene at the bar Jannik mentions owning a cowboy hat. That may garner laughter, but not for the reason intended by the writer. Out of the mouth of any other actor it would go unnoticed but Jake won't be able to get away with it. Plus, it had the effect of taking me out of the scene.
That said, it was very nice to rediscover the girls. They are both written so honestly--a little bratty, a little spoiled, a little vulnearble and self-absorbed in the way children are but entirely dependent on the emotional currents of their parents. I really liked them in the original version. There's a refreshing believability to them both.
I read parts of the Brothers script and was really impressed with it. I can't wait to see how it plays out on screen between Tobey and Jake. I think they'll play it up well. I'm really excited in fact because I can already picture it in my mind. Brothers Spy, I'd love to see the Persia script! If you want to share I'm in for that one too. Oh, joeann, I thought the same thing. I know I earlier said I'd like to see all the dialogue remain as is, BUT, if they take out that throwaway line I'll be happy. It has no bearing on the scene, doesn't move the scene forward, it's just there, like a white elephant.
Other than that, Jake's character really has some great snarky dialogue.
@ Brothers Spy - I have just read that you now own the Prince of Persia script. When you have read it, could you please tell us your opinion. We all know that the script is important for Jake.
Is it one of the usual blockbuster type films or does it have a little more depth? Is the prince a real character or just a "bubble gum"??
The script reminds me a lot of Lord of The Rings actually. I have a feeling this is what Disney is going after. So in a nutshell, I would describe it like Lord of the Rings. It's not bubblegum at all. If anything, it's one of those films that can be made real well (if it has the right director and supporting cast) or can be a total disaster.
To be honest, it was actually a decent story. It's about this Prince Dastan (Jake) who is fourth in line for the throne and he is not as respected as his older brothers. After his oldest brother wins an important victory in battle (in India), Dastan discovers a special sword and hour glass which allows you to manipulate time and people.
This power, if unleashed, can give you untold power, but it can also bring about misery. One of Dastan's principle aids tricks Dastan to use this power and the aid manipulates the situation in order to usurp power for himself. Dastan spends the rest of the film trying to undo the damage he's done.
This could be a huge film. If I were Jake I wouldn't dismiss this out of hand.
I just finished reading the Brothers script and I really liked it. I liked, not loved the original Danish version.
The change from the Danish setting to American makes the story more powerful IMO. The plot is the same with some minor differences, I can see why Sheridan, Jake, Natalie and Tobey were attracted to this project, i'm looking forward to this film when it's released in Dec.

I think that this has the potential to be a great movie with great actors. I think that Jake is gonna be great as brooding tender Tommy.

What struck me most is that the script is pretty similar to the Danish one... Yes it has been adapted to the 'All American' context and I like the different way they put the Tommy/Grace relationship, the fact that they are same age and that the plot suggests they could have been lovers, yet generally it's pretty the same.. I mean, even Tommy/Jannick drooling over the cushion which I considered as positively naive in the original movie has been transferred lot less spontaneously in this remake... I dunno, considering that (if I can remember well)a famous writer as David Benioff is involved in this project I was expecting much more of a personal view of the story...
Is it a case of lack of creativity or simply a wise adaptation?

The promos, how it's perceived by would-be viewers, is going to be what makes or breaks Brothers, IMO. Right now Americans are purposefully turning away from any movie even remotely dealing with war issues unless it's a straight shoot'em up action story. Foreign moviegoers will enjoy it, recognizing a good story, but the US . . . I'm not optimistic.
I agree Joeann. The American public it seems has no interest in war related movies. The promotion for Brothers will be interesting to watch, they could push a romantic angle but it really isn't a love triangle type movie.
It deals with the issues facing soilders coming home from war/family conflicts.
I suspect the movie won't get a wide release and will only go wide depending on the reception of the movie by critics.
I agree. It really depends on how they sell the movie. The story isn't about Afghanistan at all, so that should definitely not be a selling point for the story.
I think they should just sell the Brothers aspect to it. The family aspect. Otherwise this film could go the way all the others did.
It should be emphasised that this is not a "war on terror" film at all, but a story about two brothers.

I also totally agree with your assessment and criticism of the film. It surprised me as well, given the calibre of writer they got, how similar it was to the original. It's been "Americanized" as you would have guessed it, the relationships are more "intense" as I described it earlier. But other than that the story is pretty much the same.
But having watched the original, I think it could have been improved with a larger budget. I especially think this is true of the Afghanistan scenes which were kind of cheap in the original.
I honestly think this is a real good story if done right --- given that they got a top notch director in Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father) I think that will be the case.
Still not finished to read, but I believe that it is not a film for commercial appeal. I know that many expect more romantic scenes or a dispute of two brothers by the love of a woman. But it is not that. He is cmo already decreveram above, a film about family relationships. I hope it is well received by critics.
Brothers spy, I just read the Four Christmases script. It looks like a cute film. There were some surprises to it, but it seems like something light and fun. I really enjoyed it. It's perfect for Christmas. Though there were some surprises to it that made it dark in parts, I hope those darker elements are played up for good comedy.
I don't think the Brothers script being virtually identical to the Brodre script will be a detriment in selling this to American audiences at all. Most Americans won't watch films with subtitles, ergo, most Americans will have neither heard of nor seen Brodre.

One thing i'm noticing. I think the names were changed and Jake's character began as a Senator. I think they changed it to a Congressman once he was involved since you have to be thirty to be a Senator. Jake is only 27.
In the script the one who dies by choking on a cookie is THE SENATE MAJORITY LEADER. Which doesn't make sense why he hangs out with Jake's character if he is only a Congressman. That's why the character was later changed to be the SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE, which is the House equivilant.
The funeral scene they filmed yesterday is on page 81. I wonder if they filmed them inside the church and Sammy giving her little speech today.
The scene where he climbs out of the window just seems so funny to me. I think it's meant to be semi serious, but him bailing out a window and running in to the trees. That could be played for some comedic gold.
The vision quest, on print it sounds kind of silly, specially the scene after it in which he bulls out the moose balls.
The listing of all the sex partners near the end is hilarious. Specially the shells girl. The line by Wolf Blitzer after he gets hit in the head also pretty funny.
I have just read through the whole "Nailed" script and this is really wierd stuff.
There couldn´t be a bigger difference between this one and the "Brothers" script.
I understand why Jake would like to do this - completly different from all he has done before.
We need to have faith in Jake, the other actors and David O. Russell -otherwise this could be a complete mess.

The 1st sex scene had me in stitches, over the top but funny as was the death of the speaker of the house! I wonder if the JT reference was due to Biel being in this movie?
The BBM reference jumped out for me too, again was it added because of Jake just like the JT ref. for Jessica?
This is not a mainstream movie IMO but I enjoyed the script, thought it was sharp and funny.

I think it could be both funny and a complete distaster. Jessica's character is a tough one,man. You have to be a very good actress to menage not to turn out as ridiculous...let's hope Jessica has the same nerve and grace as Maggie Gyllenhaal in Secreterary...
I love the fact that Jake has the possibilty to play with his sex-symbol image...sort of making fun of himself, it takes a lot of sense of humour, I like it. And I love the idea of a dark comedy with a lot of political satire in it. The connection between power and sex, poitics and sex is an attractive topic to me. A poignant and current one.
I guess we have to wait and see. Let's hope it'll be a good one. :)

Brother's Spy, thank you for the script. I read it yesterday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to see Jannik has retained his punkish qualities. Will be interesting to see what Jake brings to the table with this character. We really haven't had an opportunity to directly compare Jake's acting with someone else's.
There's a line that had me wincing, in the hope that it would be dropped from this version. In the scene at the bar Jannik mentions owning a cowboy hat. That may garner laughter, but not for the reason intended by the writer. Out of the mouth of any other actor it would go unnoticed but Jake won't be able to get away with it. Plus, it had the effect of taking me out of the scene.
That said, it was very nice to rediscover the girls. They are both written so honestly--a little bratty, a little spoiled, a little vulnearble and self-absorbed in the way children are but entirely dependent on the emotional currents of their parents. I really liked them in the original version. There's a refreshing believability to them both.
I read parts of the Brothers script and was really impressed with it. I can't wait to see how it plays out on screen between Tobey and Jake. I think they'll play it up well. I'm really excited in fact because I can already picture it in my mind. Brothers Spy, I'd love to see the Persia script! If you want to share I'm in for that one too. Oh, joeann, I thought the same thing. I know I earlier said I'd like to see all the dialogue remain as is, BUT, if they take out that throwaway line I'll be happy. It has no bearing on the scene, doesn't move the scene forward, it's just there, like a white elephant.
Other than that, Jake's character really has some great snarky dialogue.
@ Brothers Spy - I have just read that you now own the Prince of Persia script. When you have read it, could you please tell us your opinion. We all know that the script is important for Jake.
Is it one of the usual blockbuster type films or does it have a little more depth? Is the prince a real character or just a "bubble gum"??
The script reminds me a lot of Lord of The Rings actually. I have a feeling this is what Disney is going after. So in a nutshell, I would describe it like Lord of the Rings. It's not bubblegum at all. If anything, it's one of those films that can be made real well (if it has the right director and supporting cast) or can be a total disaster.
To be honest, it was actually a decent story. It's about this Prince Dastan (Jake) who is fourth in line for the throne and he is not as respected as his older brothers. After his oldest brother wins an important victory in battle (in India), Dastan discovers a special sword and hour glass which allows you to manipulate time and people.
This power, if unleashed, can give you untold power, but it can also bring about misery. One of Dastan's principle aids tricks Dastan to use this power and the aid manipulates the situation in order to usurp power for himself. Dastan spends the rest of the film trying to undo the damage he's done.
This could be a huge film. If I were Jake I wouldn't dismiss this out of hand.
I just finished reading the Brothers script and I really liked it. I liked, not loved the original Danish version.
The change from the Danish setting to American makes the story more powerful IMO. The plot is the same with some minor differences, I can see why Sheridan, Jake, Natalie and Tobey were attracted to this project, i'm looking forward to this film when it's released in

Ok, I've read the Brothers script and this is what I think.
I think that this has the potential to be a great movie with great actors.
I think that Jake is gonna be great as brooding tender Tommy.
Still...
What struck me most is that the script is pretty similar to the Danish one...
Yes it has been adapted to the 'All American' context and I like the different way they put the Tommy/Grace relationship, the fact that they are same age and that the plot suggests they could have been lovers, yet generally it's pretty the same..
I mean, even Tommy/Jannick drooling over the cushion which I considered as positively naive in the original movie has been transferred lot less spontaneously in this remake...
I dunno, considering that (if I can remember well)a famous writer as David Benioff is involved in this project I was expecting much more of a personal view of the story...
Is it a case of lack of creativity or simply a wise adaptation?
What do you think Brother Spy (whom I thank you so so much for having sent this script to me I'd ve never dreamt to put my hands upon :))? What do you all think?
The promos, how it's perceived by would-be viewers, is going to be what makes or breaks Brothers, IMO. Right now Americans are purposefully turning away from any movie even remotely dealing with war issues unless it's a straight shoot'em up action story. Foreign moviegoers will enjoy it, recognizing a good story, but the US . . . I'm not optimistic.

I agree Joeann. The American public it seems has no interest in war related movies. The promotion for Brothers will be interesting to watch, they could push a romantic angle but it really isn't a love triangle type movie.
It deals with the issues facing soilders coming home from war/family conflicts.
I suspect the movie won't get a wide release and will only go wide depending on the reception of the movie by critics.

I agree. It really depends on how they sell the movie. The story isn't about Afghanistan at all, so that should definitely not be a selling point for the story.
I think they should just sell the Brothers aspect to it. The family aspect. Otherwise this film could go the way all the others did.
It should be emphasised that this is not a "war on terror" film at all, but a story about two brothers.

I also totally agree with your assessment and criticism of the film. It surprised me as well, given the calibre of writer they got, how similar it was to the original. It's been "Americanized" as you would have guessed it, the relationships are more "intense" as I described it earlier. But other than that the story is pretty much the same.
But having watched the original, I think it could have been improved with a larger budget. I especially think this is true of the Afghanistan scenes which were kind of cheap in the original.
I honestly think this is a real good story if done right --- given that they got a top notch director in Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father) I think that will be the case.
It might win Oscars.
Still not finished to read, but I believe that it is not a film for commercial appeal.
I know that many expect more romantic scenes or a dispute of two brothers by the love of a woman.
But it is not that. He is cmo already decreveram above, a film about family relationships.
I hope it is well received by critics.
Brothers spy, I just read the Four Christmases script. It looks like a cute film. There were some surprises to it, but it seems like something light and fun. I really enjoyed it. It's perfect for Christmas. Though there were some surprises to it that made it dark in parts, I hope those darker elements are played up for good comedy.

I don't think the Brothers script being virtually identical to the Brodre script will be a detriment in selling this to American audiences at all. Most Americans won't watch films with subtitles, ergo, most Americans will have neither heard of nor seen Brodre.

I've got the script for Nailed.
I'm still reading it but here's what I've got so far:
- Jake's character isn't involved until page forty.
- The motel is not meant for a sex scene, but rather it's where Jessica's character is staying.
Spoke too fast...
They have sex in the motel shower. Page 70. Their second sex scene (first was in a Congressional Cloak Room).

Ya I read that gyllenspooner. It made me laugh. I also liked the part of her having an orgasm in Portuguese. That was funny.
I wonder if the Justin Timberlake reference was intentional.
One thing i'm noticing. I think the names were changed and Jake's character began as a Senator. I think they changed it to a Congressman once he was involved since you have to be thirty to be a Senator. Jake is only 27.
In the script the one who dies by choking on a cookie is THE SENATE MAJORITY LEADER. Which doesn't make sense why he hangs out with Jake's character if he is only a Congressman. That's why the character was later changed to be the SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE, which is the House equivilant.
The funeral scene they filmed yesterday is on page 81. I wonder if they filmed them inside the church and Sammy giving her little speech today.
The character of the Speaker is in several scenes.
I just read it.
The scene where he climbs out of the window just seems so funny to me. I think it's meant to be semi serious, but him bailing out a window and running in to the trees. That could be played for some comedic gold.
The vision quest, on print it sounds kind of silly, specially the scene after it in which he bulls out the moose balls.
The listing of all the sex partners near the end is hilarious. Specially the shells girl. The line by Wolf Blitzer after he gets hit in the head also pretty funny.
Very tongue in cheek ending.

I have just read through the whole "Nailed" script and this is really wierd stuff.
There couldn´t be a bigger difference between this one and the "Brothers" script.
I understand why Jake would like to do this - completly different from all he has done before.
We need to have faith in Jake, the other actors and David O. Russell -otherwise this could be a complete mess.
The sex scenes made me laugh so hard, the exploding Death Star scenes, Sammys making out with the screen, the Justin Timberlake references - I am sure many people will be offended. :-)))

Yes, there is a lot of weird stuff in it and it's a worlds difference from Brothers. A very dark comedy.
The 1st sex scene had me in stitches, over the top but funny as was the death of the speaker of the house! I wonder if the JT reference was due to Biel being in this movie?
The BBM reference jumped out for me too, again was it added because of Jake just like the JT ref. for Jessica?
This is not a mainstream movie IMO but I enjoyed the script, thought it was sharp and funny.
The story reminds me of IHeartHuckabees, except about politics.

I think it could be both funny and a complete distaster.
Jessica's character is a tough one,man. You have to be a very good actress to menage not to turn out as ridiculous...let's hope Jessica has the same nerve and grace as Maggie Gyllenhaal in Secreterary...
I love the fact that Jake has the possibilty to play with his sex-symbol image...sort of making fun of himself, it takes a lot of sense of humour, I like it.
And I love the idea of a dark comedy with a lot of political satire in it.
The connection between power and sex, poitics and sex is an attractive topic to me. A poignant and current one.
I guess we have to wait and see.
Let's hope it'll be a good one. :)
